Bare Metal (PC Farm)
Most of DaDesktop runs on virtual desktops. But some work needs a real machine. With bare metal, each participant gets their own physical desktop or server, managed through DaDesktop.
One machine per person
Each participant gets their own physical machine instead of a virtual desktop.
Manage physical classrooms remotely
Connect an existing classroom to DaDesktop and manage the machines without being on site.
When you need bare metal
- Software that cannot run virtualised, such as ONAP and OpenStack.
- Hardware that cannot be virtualised, including certain GPUs, Mellanox cards, and other network equipment.
- Courses where firmware or physical hardware is part of the lesson.
- Physical classroom setups that need to be managed remotely.
How it works
Each physical machine connects to a DaDesktop node through a control cable called ddnexus. When creating a standalone or fresh-start desktop, select the "Metal PC" option. The desktop is then deployed directly to the physical machine.
PC Farm
You can connect existing office desktops to serve as bare metal nodes. Each physical desktop is called a potato. The server that manages them is called a pumpkin (DaDesktop node, or ddnode). The cable that connects each potato to the pumpkin via USB is called a potato stalk.
Potato stalk cables are available on eBay and Alibaba.
